This one started with me trying to make a percussion track along the lines of Paul Simon’s ‘Graceland’ album, but it turned into something quite different.

Three tracks of percussion made by strumming an acoustic guitar without holding down or sounding a chord, some latin and ethnic loops, some piano, got the first part of the tune, the verse, and decided I wanted something very different for the chorus. I found an odd stuttering rhythmic phrase for this.

Once I got the song structure sorted out, I did an improvised lyric around ideas of ego / celebrity / paranoia / self-worth imbalance. I was very pleased and surprised to get the vocals down in one take. Finally some experimenting to find an unusual vocal sound and that was that.

There’s no bass instrument on the track, but there is a bass sound generated by processing the main vocal to produce a vocal in a lower octave as a kind of deep ghostly sound, shadowing the tune.

I like this one’s lyric and rhythmic energy, and the strange vocal sound sitting atop the layers of percussion.
