about

I found a pretty sequence which I recorded on two guitars, each one playing slightly different notes. I did some ‘in and out’ editing, and a low, deep, descending tune appeared.

I imagined a man living alone in an isolated community in the far north, a landscape of snow and ice. His partner has left him.

My favourite American lyricist is Randy Newman, most famous for writing lots of Disney stuff. He does a jolly fine job of that, but I much prefer his own songs, which often contain snapshots and vignettes of flawed characters, often tackling subjects exploring the frailty of humanity.

I tried to do that here. It’s interesting, trying to think yourself into the mind of the character that you are writing about, especially if they are unsympathetic - it’s almost as if you have to try and get yourself out of the way and let the character pass through you.

A song about obsession, damage and fractured love.
