I saw some silent rushes from a film, a fly-on-the-wall documentary about the last UK lighthouse to go computerised, automatic and unmanned. I found the images interesting, particularly those of the lighthouse keeper moving around and working soberly and dutifully as his enforced retirement approached, marking the end of an era. There was something sad and noble and dignified and haunting around this situation - it was thinking about this that prompted this tune.

It was a right blooming stinker to record. Over thirty takes, occasionally ruined by local RAF helicopters buzzing the house, rabid dogs whining and growling at the window, and people dressed up as Smurfs revving their Harleys, this version was the best take; even so, I confess to one titchy little edit...

I tried to use a number of different techniques in this one: playing up and down the neck, using hammer-ons and slides and so on. I was trying to make a sound to express the feelings around the lighthouse keeper’s early retirement.
