A multi-layered philosophical lyric sits atop a simple, shuffling set of sounds.
This is one of my very favourite songs so far. I really like the tale told here, the music and lyrics perfectly matched, and I really like the idea that if God shakes his beard, angels fly.
How’s your ceiling?
.
lyrics
The ceiling’s gone and the rain comes in
And we got no food, and we’re getting thin
And the ceiling’s gone, oh, away it flew
And I bet you’re wondering
What we’re going to do
Well, I must confess
That we are wondering too
When the ceiling went, well, the roof went too
And the windows went and the doors went too
And we don’t know why, haven’t got a clue
So we’re in a box where a giant might put his shoes
Yes, a topless box for a giant to keep his shoes
When the ceiling went, with the roof and all
We were mystified and none too pleased
When the ceiling went, well, the whole world changed
We could see the birds, the sky, the clouds
The weather and the trees
Well, the ceiling’s back with the roof and doors
And the windows too, who could ask for more?
We were overjoyed and we cheered a bit
And we turned the telly on and that was it
We turned the telly on and that was it
When the ceiling went, with the roof and all...
Things are like before, or they seem to be
But there’s something aches in me
Though the ceiling’s back, something else is gone
And it’s something I can’t put my finger on
Something I can’t put my finger on
I think I miss all the things we saw
It was just like God opened up a door
I’ve a memory, brings me joyful tears
I think I might have even seen God’s beard
I caught a glimpse of God and his big white beard
When the ceiling went, with the roof and all...
So, I got my mates, in the dead of night
To come to my house, yes, to put things right
They took off the roof and the ceiling too
And God smiled down and said, “Well, how are you?”
And he smiled and shook his beard and angels flew
If we try harder we’ll be flying too

Once upon a time there was a crazy idea: to create, record and upload a musical track every day for a year. And the idea
floated round and round the planet, looking for a place to call home. After a long time of searching and wishing and watching, the idea chose to make a nest in the brain of a bushy fellow, coming to his aid and guiding him out of the doldrums, back to a magical pathway......more
