about

This gentle, shuffling music initially had me pursuing a lyrical idea about an ex-bodyguard living beyond his means in LA, now out of work - a man who used to look after film stars and has used up all his favours. He is struggling with his conscience - he is thinking of writing a book revealing all the secrets he knows about his previous employers.

Not a bad idea for a lyric but something else appeared: I got the sense of a man strolling happily along a quiet sunny street, maybe in a small town in the Northern United States or Southern Canada? The man loves his town and has been there all his life.

A good starting point for a lyric - a celebration of an environment - but as the song progresses we learn more about the strange inhabitants of the town and the existence of something mysterious...

I really like the drumming and the understated mood of this one, quite at odds with the subject matter.

Does your town have a secret?
.

lyrics

I like living in my town
I’ve been here all my life
I haven’t got a family
I never took a wife
But I’ve lots and lots of friends here
Friends who go way back
Way back into the classroom
Let’s see: there’s Paul, there’s John,
Randy, Tom, Anthony and Jack

Still get to smile
I still get to smile
I still get to smile
I still get to smile
In my little town

There’s not too much goes on here
We like it that way
Every day is perfect
Just because it came today
We don’t like the visitors
They’re not welcome here
My advice to everyone is keep away
Do I make myself clear?

Still get to smile
I still get to smile
I still get to smile
I still get to smile
In my little town

We’ve got this magic water
That bubbles up from under the ground
It’s really special
A secret that we’ve found
Take a look at me now
I’m nearly three hundred years old
But I don’t look a day over forty
So my three-hundred-year-old friends tell me

Still get to smile
I still get to smile
I still get to smile
I still get to smile
In my little town

about

bushytunes Christmas Island

Once upon a time there was a crazy idea: to create, record and upload a musical track every day for a year. And the idea floated round and round the planet, looking for a place to call home. After a long time of searching and wishing and watching, the idea chose to make a nest in the brain of a bushy fellow, coming to his aid and guiding him out of the doldrums, back to a magical pathway... ... more
