I am proud of this song which I constructed tune first, treating the melody and lyric so that this one feels like it might belong in a skewed musical. I can imagine hoards of precocious brats belting this one out for their adoring parents at some alternate reality amateur theatrical event, oblivious to the meaning of the lyric. Funny where your mind goes when you run out of pills.
The chap in this song loves to get presents, as do we all, but that is the point at which his trajectory with the rest of humanity diverges.
Do you like presents?

lyrics
Did you see what the postman brought today?
A great big box and it’s cheerful, bright and gay, hey
It’s red and yellow and pink and blue
And all the other colours of the rainbow too
The paper’s covered with tiny teddy bears
On little chairs
Whatever, whatever, whatever, whatever
Whatever, whatever it is
I’ll leave it in the box so I can stay excited
Though I’ve got no idea what it might be
Well, here it is and it’s addressed to me, see
It’s not my birthday for a long while yet
And Christmas time is playing hard to get
Have I won a competition? Don’t think so
But I don’t know
Whatever, whatever, whatever, whatever
Whatever, whatever it is
I’ll leave it in the box so I can stay excited
[Thoughts out loud]
It doesn’t say anywhere where it’s come from
I wonder: was its' journey short or long?
It might be a present from the man next door
Though he’s never done this kind of thing before
Perhaps it’s to demonstrate that he’s forgiven me, finally
Whatever, whatever, whatever, whatever
Whatever, whatever it is
I’ll leave it in the box then I can stay excited
Whatever, whatever, whatever, whatever
Whatever, whatever it is
I’ll leave it in the box so I can stay excited
[More thoughts out loud, three heads]
Whatever, whatever, whatever, whatever
Whatever, whatever it is
I’ll leave it in the box so I can stay excited
Whatever, whatever, whatever, whatever
Whatever, whatever it is
I’ll leave it in the box so I can stay excited
I’ll leave it in the box so I can stay excited
I’ll leave it in the box so I can stay excited
Once upon a time there was a crazy idea: to create, record and upload a musical track every day for a year. And the idea
floated round and round the planet, looking for a place to call home. After a long time of searching and wishing and watching, the idea chose to make a nest in the brain of a bushy fellow, coming to his aid and guiding him out of the doldrums, back to a magical pathway......more
