Are you thinking - ‘what a poncey title’? I am. It’s very poncey. But it’s also right. Ergo, je suis une ponce. Pretentious? Moi?

I sometimes sit playing dreamy sounds on the synth and just float off in a little trance. I found this sound and decided to use it to come up with an ambient piece, a kind of ‘Robert Fripp meets Anthony Philips and Vangelis in Lidl’s’ kind of thing.

The challenge I set myself here was to be very organic and deliberate with the chord changes. So I started playing chords, gradually adding and removing notes, keeping the notes in the chords bunched tightly together and allowing chords to slowly become other chords by adding and removing the notes with occasional harmonic shifts – a bit like in ‘march of chunk’, but without the constraints of a rigid harmonic structure.

I played this one in ‘live’ (I say!) and when I played it back it felt way, way too fast, so I slowed it down to a third of its original speed.

There are no themes or motifs; here we are moving tentatively through a group of notes and stretching across harmonic structures with a splendidly dreamy sound. The largest spread of notes in this piece occurs at the very end when the final chord resolves, as though the sound reaches the end of its journey.
