about

Acoustic guitar, tinkly chords, a second guitar answering and playing gentle, lyrical tunes around the chords, some added sea noise: very evocative and pretty.

I really like this one but it was a right stinker to record. The mic picked up every teeny weeny little noise I made and there were loads of squeaks and clacks and abundant profanity on my first attempts to get the main guitar down. (Had the Bishop been present, I suspect he would have blushed.)

Mission accomplished, I had a cuppa, a break, and came back to do guitar number two.

I wanted to make it sound as though two guitarists were playing at the same time and reacting to each other’s notes, in particular with the second guitar responding to the first. I had a few run throughs before recording, just to get the overall feel and shape. Got it more or less how I wanted, a spot of editing, and it felt like something was missing. I thought the tune needed something to 'anchor' it. Eating sandwiches at the seaside entered my bonce.

Seashore sandwiches are different to normal ones: they taste of salt, sand blows into them and they are often sweaty and squished, especially if they have cheese or mayonnaise in. And they can jump out of your hand and land, best side down, on the sand. Perfect. So: I added the seashore noises and it suddenly all made sense.

(Incidentally, the title: try saying it really really fast, ten times. Then make your granny try it with her teeth out. Make her do it.)

So, where did this one take you? Did you have a sandwich? And how did your granny do?

bushytunes Christmas Island

Once upon a time there was a crazy idea: to create, record and upload a musical track every day for a year. And the idea floated round and round the planet, looking for a place to call home. After a long time of searching and wishing and watching, the idea chose to make a nest in the brain of a bushy fellow, coming to his aid and guiding him out of the doldrums, back to a magical pathway... ... more
