about

I have a friend who is pretty ill and has to go to hospital and have 2-3 hour treatments. I take him along and wait for him. Sometimes I get bored. Recently my brain waved and I took my Zoom H4n - hand-held four-track recorder - along with me, with an electric guitar and some earphones.

I hid in a small corridor, plugged in and had a twang or two. Some folks passing by ignored me, some found me odd, and one showed me his scar.

So this is one of the musical ‘sketches’ I made that afternoon, a two-ish minute meandering.

The Zoom has some very groovy built-in sounds, and I found a sound that went backwards, sort of. Here’s what it does: you play a short phrase or some chords on the guitar, then the Zoom reverses the sound and plays it back to you as it records it. Very spacey and good fun. The sort of thing you could play with for hours, in a trance, while Rome burnt about your ears.
I really like backward sounds; they seem to have a completely alien quality and go to interesting places.

The challenge here was, having sort of got used to how the sound worked, to try and come up with a multi-track creation where the guitars relate to each other, where space is as important as sound.

(There may be a few more of these tracks started or done in hospital corridors, wards and waiting areas, so I’ll call them ‘hospytunes’.)

This one is called ‘mooz’ because that’s ‘Zoom’ backwards. Apt.

What do make of this one and its back to front sounds?

bushytunes Christmas Island

Once upon a time there was a crazy idea: to create, record and upload a musical track every day for a year. And the idea floated round and round the planet, looking for a place to call home. After a long time of searching and wishing and watching, the idea chose to make a nest in the brain of a bushy fellow, coming to his aid and guiding him out of the doldrums, back to a magical pathway... ... more
