about

The latin-style drum beat said ‘Cuba!’ and I came up with this lyric thinking it could be the beginning of a story that could be told over a number of songs. So this is, sort of, part one of something...

Hope you like the song and enjoy the story. I especially like the bit where the vocal opens out in the chorus as though it is really on a plane.

If any of this song sounded familiar, it may be because I purloined the chord sequence of the verse from two well-known songs and a classical piece. Triple thieving, that is...

See if you can spot the songs, both released as singles in the UK, both big sellers, early/mid seventies. One is a folk song, the other a folk-rock song (with a verbal clue in the title) and the classical piece - possibly the earliest incarnation of this particular chord sequence - is something I don’t know the name of. Sorry about that. Have fun spotting the songs...

Have you ever been offered an opportunity as exciting as the one in the song? What would you do if you were?

lyrics

I got an e-mail from my old friend
Kenny Clark, out of the blue
It said he’s doing well in Cuba
By the way, well how arel you?

I told him things are pretty dull here
Dead end job, nagging wife
Kenny said “So come and visit
Get some sun and see some life”

Now I’m on this plane to Cuba
I’m a mile up in the sky
Now I’m on this plane to Cuba
And I’m feeling pretty high

Kenny said he was expanding
Import/export, business plans
I told him I was good with numbers
Kenny Clark said “You’re my man”

Told him I was good with IT
I was pretty up to date
Spreadsheets, Powerpoint and Office
Kenny Clarke said “That sounds great”

Now I’m on this plane to Cuba
I’m a mile up in the sky
Now I’m on this plane to Cuba
And I’m feeling pretty high

I said “Kenny, why d’you pick me?”
He said “Now I’m doing good
I need someone I can trust here
Someone who’ll do the things they should

I need somebody familiar
I need someone that I know
And you were always in my corner
So come and help me run this show”

Now I’m on this plane to Cuba
I’m a mile up in the sky
Now I’m on this plane to Cuba
And I’m feeling pretty high...

about

bushytunes Christmas Island

Once upon a time there was a crazy idea: to create, record and upload a musical track every day for a year. And the idea floated round and round the planet, looking for a place to call home. After a long time of searching and wishing and watching, the idea chose to make a nest in the brain of a bushy fellow, coming to his aid and guiding him out of the doldrums, back to a magical pathway... ... more
