about

I started this one off on the ukulele sat in a hospital car park. I must get a new hobby.

Found this gentle, shuffling country style, came up with the chorus and had a tune for the verse which I suddenly realised I’d nicked from a mid-eighties pop/soul song. ‘Oh dear,’ I said aloud. So I hastily came up with this descending melody, which is altogether more bouncy and fitting. Then I thought to myself, what sort of a person might say ”I do what I do what I do”?

I suddenly saw myself having a natter with the Dalai Lama in the local head shop, discussing life, with him blessing crystals and twanging on a Stratocaster. Lo! The lyric appeared.

I like the feel and the gentle bobbing of this one. And the lyric is worthy of investigation, I reckon.

Have you seen the Dalai Lama, or someone impersonating him, playing a Stratocaster in your local head shop?

lyrics

I met the Dalai Lama
In the head shop, near the stream
He was blessing crystals
Looking peaceful and serene
I said, “Mr Lama
Can you tell me please
How you got to be you?”

He said, “Yes
I do what I do what I do
I do what I do what I do”

I thought: that’s deep
I said, “Could you explain more?”
He said, “Yes
Two things I will share with you
To help you on your way
Don’t do bad things, just do good things
Each and every day
The more you practice these two things
The more your heart will open and be true
And I do what I do what I do
Yes I do what I do what I do”

And he gave me a smile
And from the folds of his garment
Produced a Strat
And a battery-operated amp

(Solo)

“And I do what I do what I do
Yes I do what I do what I do
And I do what I do what I do what I do
And I do what I do what I do
Yes I do what I do what I do
And I do what I do
And I do what I do til I’m through”

I said, ”Thank you very much”
He said, “That’s ok”
And then I noticed his shoes were odd
And I said, “Are you really the Dalai Lama?”
And he said, “Reality is illusion,” and left
Oh well

about

bushytunes Christmas Island

Once upon a time there was a crazy idea: to create, record and upload a musical track every day for a year. And the idea floated round and round the planet, looking for a place to call home. After a long time of searching and wishing and watching, the idea chose to make a nest in the brain of a bushy fellow, coming to his aid and guiding him out of the doldrums, back to a magical pathway... ... more
