I am a big fan of Tom Waits’ European-influenced work, and thinking about that was the starting point for this outing. I came up with a simple chord sequence, rhythmically very influenced by some of the music from the film ‘Cabaret’.

Two jangly acoustics and a couple of synths cushion the vocal, as a proud new father holds his new baby daughter, expressing his love and his fears, and revealing his view of the world.

There is a strange noise top and tailing this song, which is almost like entering and then departing, having shared the thoughts in this man’s consciousness.

I like this one a lot, especially the change of sound/mood in the chorus, and the plaintive synth and the tensions set up by the different rhythms. And, of course, the lyric, which took a bit more time and effort than usual to get how I wanted it.
